Dr. Kavita Patel on How Policy is Shaping New Models of Care

Published on 5/23/2017

The health care industry is keeping a close eye on the current government landscape and how it will influence the future of health care. Dr. Kavita Patel, associate chief medical officer and Medicare director at John Hopkins Medicine and a nonresident senior fellow at The Brookings Institution, a global think tank that brings together more than 300 leading-experts in government and academia to provide research, joined The Cerner Podcast to provide her recommendations and analysis on policy issues.

In this episode, Dr. Patel shares her insight on how policy is shaping new models of care by answering these five questions:

  • How do you foresee health care IT being influence by the new administration?
  • Will MACRA proceed as planned or do you foresee changes?
  • You've spoken about the relationship-based care model — a cultural transformation and operational framework that improves safety, quality, and patient and medical staff satisfaction. How do foresee health care organizations implementing this model?
  • Health care spending in the U.S. now tops three trillion dollars a year. The average American spends more than 95-hundred dollars a year on medical expenses, by far the most among developed countries. What role do you foresee health care organizations taking to reduce health spend for the average consumer?
  • Do you foresee the U.S. ever moving toward a single payor system as many of our global allies have adopted?
