Paul Seale on the Importance of Business Continuity Planning

Published on 6/6/2017

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services require health care organizations to have a business continuity plan and disaster recover capability. It's not only mandatory, but essential for an organization to recover from a disruptive event with minimal impact to patients, employees, family members and stakeholders.

Paul Seale is managing director of hospital operations at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. In episode 26 of The Cerner Podcast, he discusses the critical component in optimizing the health care organizational resilience program across the enterprise. Paul oversees the day-to-day operations, which includes more than two dozen clinical and support service departments. He also has the responsibility of overseeing and implementing strategies, as well as enhancing overall customer service and patient satisfaction.

In this episode, Paul answers these questions:

  • Why is business continuity planning essential in the health care industry?
  • What types of situation events should provider organizations prepare for when planning?
  • How can provider organizations ensure minimal impact to patients, employees, family members and stakeholders during and after a disruptive event?
  • These types of programs are obviously not developed in a silo. Describe the critical role an executive plays and what it takes to come to an effective and executable program?
  • What are best practices to measure the effectiveness of organizational resilience?
