Open and interoperable

At Cerner, our mission is to contribute to the systemic improvement of healthcare delivery and the health of communities. It’s a huge job and we know that we can only achieve this in partnership with our clients and the broader ecosystem at large. There are many innovative companies and solutions in the market that are constantly emerging and being tailored to unique needs – it’s our job to ensure that our platforms are open and interoperable to support these innovations.

Nowhere are open and interoperable platforms more important than in supporting citizens to live an active and healthy life. We believe that the behaviour change and supportive apps of the future will be written by patients, their families or by the voluntary sector where the need and understanding is greatest. Our job is to allow these apps to flourish and be connected to the processes of healthcare.

Everyone at Cerner is committed to harnessing innovation through our support of open and interoperable platforms. In Ireland, our close relationship with other eHealth suppliers such as HealthLink is already providing a more connected patient experience that will continue to evolve with the delivery of the eHealth Ireland programme.

Our award-winning solutions and platforms enable the free flow of information access across disparate systems and healthcare entities, improving data exchange and supporting an open collaborative development community shaping the way we make healthcare better.

FAQs

What is interoperability?

Interoperability is the ability for information that advances patient care to flow freely between healthcare entities, regardless of the technology platform in place or where the care was provided. It allows health and care professionals to access, view and share patient information, such as past problems, allergies, medications, immunisations, lab results and more with other caregivers to effectively treat patients across geographical and technological boundaries.

Cerner embeds interoperability into the solutions and platforms that we provide to the market. We do this by adopting industry standards and conforming with regulations and standards in the countries we operate in.

Among those solutions that are dedicated to interoperability are our Health Information Exchange, our CareAware® personal and medical device integration platform, and HealtheIntent® – our population health platform. Interoperability is at the heart of what we do.

Cerner is active in helping develop, champion and drive interoperability standards across the world. Cerner participates in industry and professional bodies as well as supports universities with health informatics research and training for the next generation of health informaticians.

Our Cerner Millennium EHR is an open platform that is well established worldwide. We use industry open and interoperability standards to ensure information can be exchanged in and out of the EHR. We support messaging standards for third-party system integration, HIE integration, and rich proprietary APIs for application integration.

Cerner has pioneered the integration of third-party content and applications into the Cerner Millennium EHR. We provide a large selection of third-party content in our EHR from evidence-based medicine content providers. Millennium has a sophisticated internal clinical decision support capability but we can also trigger external clinical decision support services using data from the record and returning results back to clinicians.

Our work with MPages has opened our EHR for clients to innovate their own workflows and user interfaces, bringing together content and functionality from across our EHR as well as from third-party systems. Understanding the importance of creating a seamless experience for the care professional, we have ensured that our interfaces enable third-party applications to be embedded in our EHR. We do this for our open applications such as our HIE and HealtheIntent population health management applications as well as third-party systems. Cerner has been an early advocate and pioneer for SMART® on FHIR® open standards to enable developers to develop once to open API standards to work with many EHRs not just our own.

Cerner has several interoperability solutions that we use to help our clients join their information and care services together. Three of our key solutions are:

  • Health Information Exchange, which enables the free flow of patient information at the point of care to assist care professionals make safe and efficient care decisions.
  • HealtheIntent, our population health management platform that normalises data across health and care, and enables accountable care systems to take responsibility for quality and cost of care through the proactive management and care of individuals and whole populations.
  • CareAware device integration platform integrates thousands of medical devices, including personal monitoring devices into our EHR solutions and population health platforms as well as into others EHR systems.

Interoperability is key in our mission to contribute to the systemic improvement of healthcare delivery and the health of communities. Our clients and out technologies cannot achieve this alone. We must connect data and care professionals together across the continuum and ensure that our clients can leverage their data for wider innovations and research.

Cerner has dedicated solutions for interoperability and population health management that require interoperability with other providers’ solutions in the market. Our experience and understanding of how to operate EHRs has been vital in establishing our interoperability solutions and ensuring they work well with those of other suppliers.

Cerner has a strong and successful history of working with other providers in Europe. We have integrated our Cerner Millennium EHR to many departmental and hospital systems over the years and have experience of most of the main systems in use and formed important relationships with these suppliers.

Our HIE works with many of the leading solutions in Europe, including EMIS, TPP, INPS, MIG, RiO and others. Not only do we work directly with these providers, but we also integrate our solution back into their systems to work for their users.

We have been working with EMIS on population health management in the UK to ensure that HealtheIntent can process and normalise data from the EMIS system, as well as embed our population health tools in the EMIS care record, just as we do for Cerner Millennium. We will be extending this approach to other UK providers and are building on years of experience of working with them on health information exchange.
