Information technology is the nucleus in the lives of many -- whether that's ensuring our pets don’t get lost through digital trackers, using wearable devices to monitor our health or in our daily communications with one another. The same can be said for how IT operates across health care – at the very core of quality, safety and value, if executed correctly.
In this episode of The Cerner Podcast, we’re joined by Bryan Bliven, chief information officer at University of Missouri Health. Bryan discusses the role associates with IT expertise can play across the health care spectrum, the impact they can have if positioned properly and how a quality improvement tracker can tie results into operations and employee reviews.

- University of Missouri Health has used a Performance Improvement Leadership Development Program. Can you describe this program and what it is designed to do?
- Let's discuss the importance of a multi-disciplinary performance improvement team in a health care setting. How would you describe the value an associate with IT expertise could bring to the team?
- With the integrated approach University of Missouri Health has taken to performance improvement teams, specifically the focus on IT expertise, you've also implemented a Quality Improvement tracker to monitor progress and track results from all QI projects. Those results are tied to quarterly operations cycle reviews as well as individual performance evaluations. How has this impacted the improvement cycle and accountability model?
- One of the Performance Improvement Leadership Development Program projects was around improving readmission rates of the Congestive Heart Failure patient population. Can you share the details of that project and the results it achieved?
- Given these results, and the necessity of continual improvement of health care processes and procedures, can you speak to any current or future projects and the role IT is playing in each, respectively? How do you see the need for IT expertise evolving in the health care industry?
