Ep. 78: Virginia Commonwealth University's Dr. Colin Banas on the Rise of Mobile Technology in Health Care

Published on 6/5/2018

Mobile technology is constantly evolving the way that nurses and physicians are interacting with the health care consumer. From making appointments to viewing lab results and even communicating through telehealth technology, mobile strategies are constantly evolving to put the patient first. But navigating these strategies can be especially difficult in academic medical centers, where leaders are not only providing care to patients, but are shaping the minds of future leaders in health care.

In this episode of The Cerner Podcast, we’re joined by Dr. Colin Banas, an associate professor at Virginia Commonwealth University and the chief medical informatics officer at the VCU School of Medicine. Both HIMSS and AMDIS recently named Dr. Banas the 2018 Physician Executive Leader of the Year. He discusses what a mobile technology strategy looks like in a health care setting.

Dr. Banas answers the following questions:

  • While pagers are still widely used by clinicians in a hospital setting, more and more, we’re seeing mobile technology replace them. Can you share your insights on how smartphones and apps have made their way into the clinical setting over the past decade?
  • With advancements in smartphone technology and connected devices, we’re able to reduce clinician burden and facilitate better coordination across the care team. What have been the biggest benefits in smartphones and mobile technologies for clinicians?
  • Mobile technology can mean different things to different people, and it’s important to consider the differing touchpoints between health care professionals and health care consumers. In your experience, how has mobile innovations impacted the patient-physician relationship in recent years?
  • Navigating system-wide digital transformation is no simple matter, especially in the clinical setting. What are the biggest obstacles that health care professionals face when implementing mobile technologies, and how have they overcome these challenges?
  • Finally, let’s talk about what we can expect from mobile technology in years to come. How do you think mobile communication, health portals and other health care technologies might evolve in the coming years?
