Ep. 73: CAMH’s Dr. Damian Jankowicz on Transforming into a Data-Driven Organization

Published on 5/1/2018

There’s a lot of talk in the health care industry today around digital transformation and how organizations should shift to a data-driven culture. For the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, a mental health teaching hospital located in Toronto, Canada, these ideas aren’t just buzzwords. They are the building blocks by which this organization achieved HIMSS Stage 7.

In this episode of The Cerner Podcast, we’re joined by Dr. Damian Jankowicz, vice president, chief information officer and chief privacy officer at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. Dr. Jankowicz discusses how CAMH has transformed itself into a data-driven organization through implementation of its clinical information system (CIS) as well as an enterprise data strategy.

In this episode, Dr. Jankowicz answers the following questions:

  • What does being a data-driven organization mean for a mental health system like the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health?
  • It seems like a clinical information system would hold unique importance to a research enterprise, such as CAMH. How does integrating clinical data with research data and analytics-specific strategies empower better health outcomes?
  • What are some key outcomes that CAMH has experienced as a result of its focus on data? What impact have these results had on overall health care performance?
  • Can you describe some of the challenges or obstacles a data-driven culture within a health care setting might encounter and need to account for?
  • Let’s talk future-state. The health care industry is facing an influx of data like never before, and we’ve spent some time talking about how to extract insights from that data and put them to use today. How do you see the role of data in a health care setting evolving in the next 3-5 years?
