Ep. 53: The YMCA's Dr. Daphne Bascom on Community-Integrated Health Programs

Published on 1/9/2018

The YMCA defines community-integrated health as the effort to strengthen the linkages between traditional health care and community-based prevention to help individuals prevent, delay, or live better with chronic conditions.

In this episode of The Cerner Podcast, we're joined by Dr. Daphne Bascom, senior vice president and medical director at the YMCA of Greater Kansas City and professor in the Department of Biomedical and Health Informatics at the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Medicine. Daphne discusses community-integrated health and its role in reshaping the way the health care industry thinks about the whole person.

Daphne answers the following questions:

  • Let's talk about the idea of a community health record as the next iteration of an electronic health record. Can you discuss the evolution of that term and what it means?
  • Why is it important for the health care industry and professionals to build bridges between the traditional health care that takes place in hospitals and clinics and community-based prevention strategies?
  • Can you talk about the role that social determinants of health play in community-integrated health care?
  • What are some barriers to community-integrated care, and how can industry leadership overcome them?
  • Are there any regulatory updates or legislation that you believe will be helpful as the industry moves toward a community-integrated health care model?
