    Ep. 109: Dwayne and Stephanie Hoelscher on Rapid Clinical Decision Support Deployment for Infectious Diseases

    When properly implemented, clinical decision support, or CDS, can be one of the most critical tools in enhancing decision-making in the clinical workflow. CDS can increase the efficiency of care, reduce errors and improve overall outcomes. As a sophisticated health IT tool, it can simplify complex electronic health record (EHR) systems.

    CDS was especially impactful in the 2014 outbreak of the Ebola virus in the United States, when a more modular implementation of CDS enabled clinicians to adapt its use by allowing them to modify its application. More recently, it has been pivotal in the fight against Zika, where experts were able to develop a workflow that helped improve care for patients who were at risk of the virus. By allowing for similar adaptations, CDS is a powerful tool in combating the infectious diseases of tomorrow.

    On this episode of The Cerner Podcast, we are joined by clinical decision support experts Dwayne Hoelscher, a clinical informatics analyst at UMC Health System, and Stephanie H. Hoelscher, a chief clinical analyst at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.
