Ep. 105: Brad Myers and Bushra Muraywid on the ViPRx Virtual Pharmacy Program

Published on 11/27/2018

In today’s health care world, quality is top of mind. In addition to treating patient illnesses, providers are now also responsible for treating the whole person beyond an episodic event. To holistically manage both health and care, the role of care team members beyond the provider-patient relationship and efficient use of resources has become increasingly important.

In this episode of The Cerner Podcast, we’re joined by University of Missouri Health Care's Brad Myers, executive director of pharmacy and lab services, and Bushra Muraywid, pharmacist. Brad and Bushra are here to talk about their virtual pharmacy program (ViPRx), which is designed to deliver providers pharmaceutical insights that weren’t previously available a day or two prior to a patient visit.

Through the program, a virtual pharmacist combs patients’ medical records for medication appropriateness at more than 60 locations — a task that would otherwise be nearly impossible.

Brad and Bushra answer the following questions:

  • Why is a multi-faceted care team important, especially, as we continue along the journey of value-based care?
  • How would you describe your ViPRx program, and what are some of the drivers for implementing such a program?
  • What technology have you implemented, and how have these electronic medical records and population health management tools been instrumental to the ViPRx program?
  • How has the ViPRx program impacted the experiences of providers, patients and pharmacists? Have you seen any quantitative results?
  • How will the ViPRx program evolve within the next one to three years?
  • What advice do you have for peers who are thinking of implementing a similar virtual pharmacy program?
  • As you look to the future of MU’s pharmacy, what other areas of focus or programs will drive quantitative value for your organization?
