Ep. 152: Creating a common electronic health record for Service members and Veterans | 22:32

Published on 10/29/2019

The health record modernization effort for the departments of Defense (DoD) and Veterans Affairs (VA) is the largest health system transformation in history, both in terms of size and complexity. When complete, approximately 18 million Service members, Veterans and their families will have one common record that will empower a lifetime of seamless care.

The DoD is delivering MHS GENESIS, a single integrated medical and dental record, developed by the Leidos Partnership for Defense Health, that will deploy to all DoD military hospitals and clinics around the world. Cerner is also working with VA’s Office of Electronic Health Record Modernization (EHRM) to deliver the same health record solutions as the DoD, thus, delivering one common record for Service members and Veterans.

In this episode, Travis Dalton, president for Cerner Government Services, talks to Mr. William Tinston, program executive officer for Defense Healthcare Management Systems, and Mr. John Windom, executive director for VA’s Office of Electronic Health Record Modernization.

They answer the following questions:

  • What are some of the lessons learned from the initial deployment sites in the Pacific Northwest that helped inform the second wave of deployment (Wave TRAVIS)?
  • What are some initial reactions from Wave TRAVIS to the revised training approach, and what are some practices DoD is implementing to support change management for end users?
  • What improvements have been made to the training program and clinical workflows to help ease the transition for practitioners and clinicians?
  • How has the DoD’s approach informed the VA’s strategy?
  • How are DoD and VA working together to ensure that the patient remains at the center of care?
  • How are DoD and VA collaborating to show stakeholders how MHS GENESIS and EHRM will be interoperable as one common record?
  • What excites you most about this mission to transform health care delivery for Veterans and Service members?
