CEO Brent Shafer Announces Opioid Toolkit for Cerner Clients | #CHC18

Published on 10/9/2018
Today in CEO Brent Shafer's 2018 Cerner Health Conference (CHC) keynote, he had a special announcement: In the coming weeks, Cerner will introduce a new suite of advancements intended to help our clients win the battle against the opioid epidemic. The Opioid Toolkit, which includes a number of resources, will be available to all clients.

“The opioid epidemic is one of the few things that Washington seems to be in agreement in acting on,” Shafer said, referring to the recent Combatting the Opioid Epidemic Act. “This is one big impact we can have this year. For about a decade now, we’ve been investing in work to curb the opioid issue that is impacting so many communities across the country and the world.”

The Opioid Toolkit, Shafer continued, is an extension of Cerner’s commitment to solving for this issue. The toolkit will face up in clinical workflows and is designed to ensure safe prescribing patterns by helping providers identify the potential for substance use disorder. The toolkit will provide resources including analytics to enable assessment of prescribing patterns, clinical decision support for opioid management and a substance use disorder risk algorithm.

“There are over 2 million people [in America] currently impacted by the opioid epidemic,” Shafer said. He faced the full auditorium and issued a challenge to Cerner clients and associates: “None should die from it. Are you willing to take that challenge? I hope you are.”

Cerner Health Conference (CHC) is Cerner’s annual, industry-leading health care event, taking place this year from Oct. 7-11 at the Kansas City Convention Center. To learn more or to register for the conference and sign up for education sessions, visit the CHC website
