Ep. 90: Shawnee Mission Health's Andrea Hall & Christina Hiatt on the Power of Hybrid Clinics

Published on 8/28/2018

The health care industry is evolving constantly. As consumers take control of their own health and data, big brands are partnering and health systems are reacting to meet the needs of the patient. In some cases, the needs of the patient are addressed in the form of a hybrid clinic.

What is a hybrid clinic, exactly? In this episode of The Cerner Podcast, we tackle that question. Our featured guests are Andrea Hall and Christina Hiatt from the clinical informatics team at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Overland Park, Kansas. In this episode, they discuss the care delivery style at a hybrid clinic, including how reimbursement drives EHR decision-making and the role EHR systems play in the clinical documentation process.

Andrea and Christina answer the following questions:

  • Shawnee Mission Medical Center is part of a hybrid clinic. Can you describe what a hybrid clinic is and what it is designed to do? How is your hybrid clinic model set up?
  • You’ve called your process for integrating clinical documentation “patient-centered.” What does that mean to you, and how have you refined the process to focus on the patient?
  • Let's discuss the role documentation platforms play in a hybrid clinic. How is it different from platforms for inpatient or outpatient clinics?
  • Reimbursement is challenging issue for many health care systems today. How does reimbursement in the hybrid clinic play into your documentation?
  • Let's talk about when a clinic would have an offsite procedural area. What does that journey look like from paper documentation to electronic documentation?
  • How do you see clinical documentation in hybrid clinics evolving over the next 3-5 years?
